A Cantonese Legacy on New York Streets: Canton Avenue Unveiled, Honoring Centuries of Overseas Cantonese Diaspora
紐約佈碌崙正式揭幕「廣東大道」,廣府文化遍地開花
In Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst community of New York, a brand-new street sign adds a Cantonese mark to this global metropolis. At the intersection of Bay Parkway and 86th Street, the bilingual street sign of Canton Avenue was officially unveiled. It carves the imprint of Lingnan culture onto New York’s streets, creating a permanent landmark for the century-long struggles of Cantonese overseas migrants.
This “Canton Avenue” does not replace the original road name; instead, it is an additional official honorary title, an acknowledgement by New York City government of Cantonese Chinese communities’ long-term settlement and contributions to local neighbourhoods. This area in Brooklyn is a major hub for new Chinese immigrants in New York. Many Cantonese migrants have settled and built their lives here, fostering a strong Lingnan atmosphere and forming a key enclave for overseas Cantonese people. This naming finally gives the scattered overseas Lingnan cultural heritage a tangible, solemn urban symbol.
A simple street sign carries a century of untold stories. Back in the old days, countless Cantonese ancestors left their hometowns and sailed across oceans to America with the pioneering spirit. Over a hundred years ago, thousands of Cantonese labourers travelled to the United States to build the Transcontinental Railroad. They dug tunnels and cut through mountains day and night under brutal conditions, laying the vital cross-continental railway with their sweat and lives. More than 1,200 Cantonese workers were buried forever on foreign soil.
These labourers were poorly paid and treated unfairly. Their tremendous sacrifices were overlooked for generations. For over a century, Cantonese diaspora communities uphold the Lingnan spirit: bold innovation, pragmatism, inclusiveness and resilience. Generations of Cantonese immigrants, from railway workers and shopkeepers to modern professionals, settled down, looked after one another, integrated into local society, boosted neighbourhood economy and preserved Chinese culture, bringing great strength to New York’s urban development and multicultural landscape.
From quiet hard work to a named avenue in the city, the creation of Canton Avenue pays tribute to the sacrifices of early Chinese migrants and recognises the value of overseas Cantonese communities. The historic name “Canton”, which carries hundreds of years of overseas memory, reappears on New York streets. It is more than a place name update; it is an echo of Lingnan culture across the Pacific Ocean.
Walking along Canton Avenue today, you can feel the Lingnan vibes everywhere. Cantonese restaurants, Asian grocery stores and tight-knit communities turn this New York street into a spiritual harbour for overseas wanderers. To countless Cantonese abroad, this sign is not just a cold urban marker, but a miniature of homeland, a cultural bond, a tangible carrier of homesickness far away from home.
In multicultural New York, diverse ethnic cultures thrive side by side. The inauguration of Canton Avenue brings Lingnan culture into the cultural map of a world-class city. It records how Chinese immigrants grew from marginal newcomers to established residents, gaining recognition from the wider world.
The avenue bears the name, and the cultural lineage endures. The hearts of overseas compatriots reach across mountains and seas. New York’s Canton Avenue is a footnote for century-old overseas Chinese history, a blooming of Lingnan spirit overseas, and vivid proof of cultural exchange between China and the West. This transoceanic avenue links the roots of Guangdong homeland with the vast global stage. It will carry the struggles and glory of generations of overseas Cantonese people, enduring steadily on foreign land.
