Cantonese intergenerational inheritance thrives in San Francisco, and many Chinese-American children speak fluent Cantonese. Beyond family dinner tables, Cantonese culture has taken root in schools and is passed down among youth through diverse activities.

Local schools often hold Cantonese speech events and Cantonese cultural workshops. At the graduation ceremony of Garfield Elementary School, children in red gowns gave speeches in Cantonese. Their earnest looks form a vivid picture of heritage transmission. The school also hosted a fun mahjong parade: kids dressed as mahjong tiles marched down the street, holding placards printed with “East, South, West, North, Red Dragon, Prosperity”, bringing Cantonese folk traditions to the public.

As an iconic symbol of Cantonese culture, mahjong makes this parade more than just entertainment. While rehearsing and marching, children learn traditional Chinese characters and folk customs, drawing closer to the culture their ancestors knew.

In many overseas Chinese communities, ancestral languages fade with each generation. San Francisco takes schools as its foundation, using lighthearted activities such as speeches and folk parades to bridge the gap between children and their heritage language and traditions.

Young people carry the ancestral voice forward and bring old customs to life. Speeches and parades turn Cantonese from merely the language of elders into a culture children love to speak and engage with, keeping the Cantonese cultural legacy alive overseas.
